Making Sure Your Home Is Safe After a Biohazardous Incident

Making Sure Your Home Is Safe After a Biohazardous Incident

Biohazardous incidents can pose a serious threat to your home and family. That's why it's essential to take steps to ensure your home is safe after such an incident. Here are some tips to help you get started. With the help of biohazard remediation professionals, you can help keep your family safe from harm.

Call a professional cleaning company that specializes in biohazard remediation.

These specialized services can help to restore your property following incidents that involve biohazards, such as hazardous materials from crime scenes or deceased individuals. Professional biohazard remediation companies use advanced techniques and equipment, such as negative air machines and gas permeable barriers, to assist with biohazard containment and removal.

Bio-One understands how to properly dispose of biohazardous waste under all applicable regulations to ensure your and your loved one's safety. Therefore, do not hesitate to contact a professional biohazard remediation company immediately if you need biohazard containment or removal.

Make sure that you and your family are safe.

Identifying biohazards in the home is not always easy, so it is a good idea to contact a qualified professional for this task. Biohazards can range from viruses and bacteria to waste products from pests like rodents and insects. The longer biohazards exist in your home, the more dangerous they can be over time, making biohazard remediation critical for reducing risk and keeping your family safe.

Therefore, reaching out for professional biohazard remediation services, can help protect you and your loved ones.

Do not attempt to remove any items from the affected area.

It is essential that biohazard cleanup professionals take care when handling potentially hazardous materials. During a biohazard incident, it is essential not to attempt to remove any items from the affected area. By doing so, there is a risk of spreading biohazards further and causing more damage than before.

Additional biohazards could also become airborne and cause even greater harm if precautions are not taken. In order to protect yourself and others in the vicinity, it is important to leave biohazard-related containment and clean-up to certified biohazard cleanup professionals with the right equipment and knowledge to do the job safely and effectively.

Stay away and safe while the professionals do the restoration work.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on us all, including your home – biohazard remediation services may be required. For your safety, staying away from the affected area is best while the professionals tackle the dirty work. It is equally important to finding reliable biohazard restoration teams that provide efficient and effective services. Professionals are trained and certified for biohazard remediation, so select the right company to do this service properly.

Most of the cases, biohazard remediation jobs are covered by Insurance companies.

Biohazard remediation can be a long and expensive process, sometimes taking days or weeks to complete depending on the nature of the job. Thankfully, typically these services are covered by an insurance policy if events like a fire or storm cause property damage.

With advanced technology and experienced personnel, biohazard remediation companies can safely eliminate any dangerous pathogens and restore properties to a livable standard. While the prospect of hiring professional help may be intimidating at first, knowing that most cases of biohazard remediation are covered under insurance makes it one less concern for business owners and homeowners alike in times of difficulty.

Helping someone with hoarding can be emotionally draining, so make sure to take time for yourself and ask for help when needed. Following these tips can help make the experience more manageable for you and the person you are helping.

How can family and friends support a loved one who is struggling with Hoarding Disorder?

Hoarding disorder is a serious mental illness that can profoundly impact a person's life. While hoarders may feel a strong attachment to their belongings, the reality is that their possessions are often taking over their homes and putting their health and safety at risk. For family and friends, it can be difficult to watch a loved one struggle with a hoarding disorder, but it is important to resist the urge to clean up their home for them.

Encourage them to seek professional help.

Just cleaning will not solve the underlying problem and may only worsen things. Instead, try to provide support and understanding. Encourage them to seek professional help, and offer to help them declutter their home in a respectful and non-judgmental way. People struggling with hoarding often need support to overcome this condition.

Biohazard Cleanup - What You Need to Know & How We Can Help

When most people think of biohazard cleanup, they envision scenes from movies or TV shows where a team in hazmat suits enters a home to remove evidence of a crime. While this is one type of biohazard cleanup, it is not the only type. In reality, biohazard cleanup can refer to any situation with potential exposure to harmful substances. This can include everything from cleaning up after a natural disaster to removing hazardous waste from an industrial site. In each case, biohazard cleanup is necessary to protect the health and safety of those who may come into contact with the contaminated area.

Our biohazard cleanup team at Bio-One of Orange are specially trained to identify and safely remove dangerous materials. We use personal protective equipment (PPE) to limit our exposure while doing the work. Common examples of biohazards that require cleanup include blood, bodily fluids, and certain chemicals. In some cases, biohazardous waste must be disposed of in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. Depending on the situation, biohazard cleanup may also require the use of specialized equipment, such as powerful disinfectants and negative pressure machines.

How to identify a biohazard situation

Many people are unaware of what a biohazard is and how to identify a biohazard situation. A biohazard is any material that contains potentially infectious agents, such as blood or other bodily fluids, tissue, and certain types of pathogens. These materials can seriously threaten the health of anyone who contacts them.

There are a few key things to consider when identifying a biohazardous situation.

First, look for any visible blood or other bodily fluids. These fluids can contain harmful pathogens that can cause serious illness or disease. Second, look for any signs of tissue damage, such as open wounds or burns. Third, look for any suspicious containers, such as vials or syringes, that may contain dangerous pathogens. If you see any of these signs, it is important to take immediate action to protect yourself and others from potential harm.

The dangers of improperly cleaning up a biohazard

When blood or other bodily fluids are present, it is important to clean up the area as soon as possible. These fluids can contain bloodborne diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis, which can be transmitted through contact with infected blood. In addition, these fluids can also attract insects, rodents, and other pests, which can spread disease and contaminate food supplies. Blood and other bodily fluids can pose a serious health risk if not cleaned up properly. Therefore, following proper protocol when cleaning up a biohazard is important.

Health Risks Associated with Exposure to Animal Feces and Urine - Bio-One of Orange.

Bio-One of Orange specializes in feces and urine cleanup, disinfection, and decontamination. If the situation gets out of control, our specialists can help restore your house or property from the biohazardous waste associated with pets. Just like humans, pets need to live in healthy, adequate conditions. As a pet owner, you must provide more than just shelter; pet owners must provide food, bathing, exercise, medical care, and all the attention that guarantees their welfare.

An important aspect of being a pet owner entails making sure pets have basic health and physical function areas designated to not interfere with our living conditions. Animal feces and urine are highly dangerous and contagious. While it’s safe for humans to clean it in normal conditions, taking care of large volumes of feces and urine by yourself may pose multiple health risks for you, your family, and even your pets.

Toxoplasmosis - A disease transmitted from cats via infected feces

Toxoplasmosis is a disease that can cause serious health complications for humans, especially pregnant women. Exposure to cat feces is usually the cause of transmission, although it’s also been reported that toxoplasmosis can be transmitted via the intake of undercooked and contaminated food. Mothers can also transmit the disease to their children during pregnancy.

Toxoplasmosis symptoms are not immediately visible, which makes it hard to diagnose. However, it’s common for people to show flu-like symptoms and general body aches. Toxoplasmosis can pose a higher health risk for babies and children!

Some people become reluctant to the idea of having a cat in the house because of the fear of getting toxoplasmosis. The truth is, in all disease and infection-related situations, prevention is key. If you own a cat or want to adopt one for your home, don’t let the fear stop you.

Recommendations for those owning (or interested in owning) cats:

  • Try to keep your cat indoors: For some people, this might be difficult. It’s not impossible, you just need to make some quick house accommodations for the new family member. If your cat goes outside, they might take care of their needs in your yard, contaminating the soil. It’s best to have them do their needs in a litter box.
  • Take precautions when cleaning their litter box: Use gloves and a mask when cleaning their litter box. Change the litter regularly and always clean outdoors, in ventilated areas.

If you need help with taking care of unattended animal feces and urine, let Bio-One of Orange's specialists help you. Whenever we are called for feces and urine cleanup, our technicians adhere to strict guidelines and procedures to ensure your home is clean, disinfectd, and free from all biohazards.

Salmonella Infection - A common bacterial disease transmitted via contaminated food and animal feces

Although salmonella infection is not life-threatening, it can cause serious complications for everyone in the family. The salmonella bacteria usually live in animals' intestines, making their feces a highly contagious transmitter. Salmonella symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and headaches.

Salmonella infection can be treated at home, and the symptoms usually last up to seven days. The best way to prevent Salmonella infection in your house is by:

  • Keep your kitchen area clean: Always wash your hands after touching raw meat, and make sure every utensil is properly washed and disinfected after use.
  • A special tip is to have two cutting boards: one for meat, seafood, and other proteins and one for fruits and vegetables.
  • Place your pet’s food and water resources away from the kitchen: Make sure their bowls are distant from your kitchen area.
  • Always wash your hands after touching your pet and cleaning their physical function areas: As we mentioned before, do the cleaning outdoors, in ventilated areas, and as regularly as possible.

Our specialists have encountered situations where pet owners have gotten overwhelmed by animal feces and urine cleanup situations. Professionals must handle these high-risk cases, as the areas must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.

Leptospirosis - Tramitted via animal urine

Most domestic pets, like dogs and cats, may carry this bacteria in their urine. Wild animals also carry this bacteria, and the main source of infection is contaminated water and soil. Leptospirosis bacteria are resistant, they can survive for months.

Humans can get leptospirosis by having contact with animal urine (and other body fluids) and also from contact with contaminated soil and water. You can prevent leptospirosis by:

  • Promptly cleaning animal feces and urine: A healthy home is safer. Make sure to clean any accidents from your pets and dispose of the waste in a sealed plastic bag.
  • Always wash your fruits and vegetables before consuming: This is a healthy practice that minimizes the risk of leptospirosis and several other diseases.

Bio-One of Orange's feces and urine cleanup specialists are prepared to contain, disinfect and disinfect areas where animal waste might have been severely impacted. Following strict guidelines and procedures, we will work to ensure the areas return to a safe, hazard-free condition for everyone in the family.

Bio-One of Orange can help.

Animal feces and urine pose serious health risks for humans, and they must be cleaned by professionals. Bio-One of Orange's specialists work following EPA and NIOSH-approved regulations to make sure residential and commercial properties are properly remediated from biohazardous waste and blood and body fluids pathogens.

What is Considered Biohazardous Waste? Bio-One of Orange.

Bio-One of Orange serves as the biohazard cleaning specialist and last responder to clean, disinfect, and disinfect the scene from biohazardous waste after a gruesome scene. The residue left behind by traumatic events poses risks of disease outbreaks.

Biohazardous waste has four classifications.

  • Sharp biohazardous waste is any material sharp enough to provoke skin rupture and contamination from undisinfectd, unsterilized materials. This bio-waste includes needles, lancets, and glass materials.
  • Liquid biohazardous waste is bulk liquids used for specimen conservation and all human/animal bodily fluids. Liquid biohazardous waste must be treated using water-proof, non-breakable containers.
  • Solid biohazardous waste is non-sharp objects that pose a risk of contamination for the general public. Medical supplies such as gloves, plates, and bodysuits exemplify solid biohazardous waste.
  • Tissue biological waste includes any human/animal tissue waste that has been used in research labs. Tissue biohazardous waste must be collected in a sealable bag.

If you’re a medical worker, public service agent, or a victim of a traumatic life event exposed to any of these biohazards, you must proceed to wash the affected area with abundant water for 15 minutes.

Learning About the Four Biosafety Levels - Bio-One of Orange.

It takes special training and preparation to remove biohazardous waste. Work environments involving biological waste, such as laboratories, medical facilities, and chemical labs, follow strict guidelines regarding adequate PPE and practices to ensure that every material handled inside these areas doesn’t spread outside the parameters.

What is Biosafety?

Every safety precaution that is applied in work environments to reduce employees' exposure to potentially infectious microorganisms and bacteria is considered biosafety. Bacteria and airborne pathogens can easily result in disease outbreaks if agencies, facilities, and employers fail to follow these regulations.

Bio-One of Orange works with law enforcement and local authorities to respond effectively when these need to remove biohazardous waste from premises affected by crime and trauma scenes. Our ultimate goal is to protect the community from these dangerous pathogens.

4-Level Biosafety Classification - How does it work?

There are four levels of biosafety practices. Each level builds upon the other, starting from Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1), representing the “lowest” risk of disease, infection, and potential biohazard. Laboratories and work environments classified in a Level 4 (BSL-4) are those that handle the most dangerous and exotic bacteria/pathogens; the outbreak of these materials can be fatal and mostly impossible to treat with medication or vaccination.

Biosafety Level 1(BSL-1)

Microbes with the lowest or unknown risk of consistently causing diseases in healthy adults. Workplaces designated with BLS-1 classification usually present minimal risk to lab facilities and environments.

Even so, workers must adhere to the following regulations and safety practices:

  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - lab coats, gloves, mask, eye protection.
  • A sink must be available for hand washing/disinfection.
  • The lab area should have doors that separate this workspace from the rest of the facility.

Facilities designated with BSL-1 classification include Research labs with the use of benches.

Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2)

Built upon BSL-1, environments designated with a BLS-2 classification work with microbes that pose a moderate risk of exposure. Microbes are typically indigenous (microorganisms that have been adapting and surviving within the native soil environments throughout the years), and the intensity of the associated diseases may variate.

Regulations and safety practices include:

  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - lab coats, gloves, mask, eye protection. Emphasis on eye protection and face shields, if necessary.
  • A sink and eyewash must be available for disinfection.
  • Use of autoclave or specific alternative methods to dispose of biological waste.

Facilities designated with BSL-2 classification include Laboratories with self-closing doors. Entrance is restricted.

Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3)

Built upon BLS-2, environments designated with a BLS-3 classification work with microbes that may carry potentially lethal diseases via respiratory transmission. Microbes can be either indigenous or exotic

Regulations and safety practices include:

  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - lab coats, gloves, mask, eye protection. Respirators may be required.
  • All microbe work must be performed using a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
  • A hands-free sink and eyewash must be available for disinfection.
  • The laboratory has an airflow system that prevents the exhausted air from coming into clean areas.

Facilities designated with BSL-3 classification include Laboratories with two sets of self-closing and locking doors. Access to the laboratory is restricted/controlled at all times.

Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4)

Built upon BLS-3, environments designated with a BSL-4 classification work with the most dangerous and exotic bacteria and microbes. Diseases and infections caused by these microbes can be aerosol-transmitted and are usually fatal.

Regulations and safety practices include:

  • Mandatory change of clothing before and after exiting the laboratory. A Post-exit shower is also mandatory.
  • Decontamination of all used materials before exiting the laboratory.
  • All microbe work must be performed using a Class III Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Full bodysuit with air supply and positive pressure system.

Facilities designated with BSL-4 classification include Laboratories in a separate building or isolated from the rest of the building. Laboratories must have dedicated air supply and exhaust air systems and their own decontamination systems.

Bio-One's Extreme Cleanup Services - Helping the OC Community

Bio-One of Orange works closely with emergency responders, law enforcement, victim advocates, and public service agencies to provide extreme cleanup services and biohazard remediation services. In most cases, these scenarios represent health risks for the people involved if not treated properly and on time.

“It’s all about helping people through their darkest days and getting involved with the community.” Words from Bio-One of Orange Owner and CEO Cory Flores. Bio-One of Orange started operating in October of last year to an enormous, positive response from members of the Orange County community, many of who had been involved in traumatic, difficult situations and needed help.

Crime and Trauma Scene Cleanup and Biohazard Remediation

Our extreme cleanup services guarantee that the victims return to a hazard-free environment and do so with the emotional support that these emergency situations call for.  We also specialize in biohazard decontamination. Following strict guidelines and procedures, we remove all biohazardous matter from any scene.

Whether a traumatic accident has happened or the area has suffered consequences from gross filth, hoarding, or animal waste, our team of specialists will take care of the remediation process, assessing damage and disposing of anything that might represent a safety threat to you or loved ones.

Extreme Hoarding Remediation Services

Bio-One or Orange’s specialists have helped many families throughout Orange County and surrounding communities with one particularly delicate issue: hoarding. Many factors influence an individual to develop a hoarding disorder. Many people mistake clutter with hoarding when the reality is that a person who hoards is more exposed to multiple threats and safety hazards within their own house or property.

Additionally, a person who has clutter in their house or property is also exposed to similar safety threats. Still, for them, the cleaning and decluttering process doesn’t represent stress and anxiety, as the person can understand the dangers of cluttering.

Bio-One works with the mindset of making individuals feel comfortable when approaching extreme hoarding cleanups. They have the proper training to face these situations with care, compassion, and a desire to serve and help the individual turn things around.

Extremely cluttered can lead to hoarding, so it’s important to take care of these situations if you feel that you or someone you love is losing control over the things they accumulate in their houses or properties. We offer a supportive and professional service that will allow you to face any extreme cleaning scenario with the best attitude while keeping your safety and well-being as one of our top priorities.

Rodent and Animal Waste Cleanup

Disinfecting houses impacted by human and animal waste is often a difficult task to do. The remediation process should be done following strict safety guidelines, as this waste is highly contagious and dangerous for the people exposed to it. Bio-One of Orange's technicians use professional EPA-approved materials, adequate PPE, and training procedures to guarantee your house or property is completely free from biohazardous waste associated with human and animal waste.
