What is Considered Biohazardous Waste? Bio-One of Orange.

Bio-One of Orange serves as the biohazard cleaning specialist and last responder to clean, disinfect, and disinfect the scene from biohazardous waste after a gruesome scene. The residue left behind by traumatic events poses risks of disease outbreaks.

Biohazardous waste has four classifications.

  • Sharp biohazardous waste is any material sharp enough to provoke skin rupture and contamination from undisinfectd, unsterilized materials. This bio-waste includes needles, lancets, and glass materials.
  • Liquid biohazardous waste is bulk liquids used for specimen conservation and all human/animal bodily fluids. Liquid biohazardous waste must be treated using water-proof, non-breakable containers.
  • Solid biohazardous waste is non-sharp objects that pose a risk of contamination for the general public. Medical supplies such as gloves, plates, and bodysuits exemplify solid biohazardous waste.
  • Tissue biological waste includes any human/animal tissue waste that has been used in research labs. Tissue biohazardous waste must be collected in a sealable bag.

If you’re a medical worker, public service agent, or a victim of a traumatic life event exposed to any of these biohazards, you must proceed to wash the affected area with abundant water for 15 minutes.

Learning About the Four Biosafety Levels - Bio-One of Orange.

It takes special training and preparation to remove biohazardous waste. Work environments involving biological waste, such as laboratories, medical facilities, and chemical labs, follow strict guidelines regarding adequate PPE and practices to ensure that every material handled inside these areas doesn’t spread outside the parameters.

What is Biosafety?

Every safety precaution that is applied in work environments to reduce employees' exposure to potentially infectious microorganisms and bacteria is considered biosafety. Bacteria and airborne pathogens can easily result in disease outbreaks if agencies, facilities, and employers fail to follow these regulations.

Bio-One of Orange works with law enforcement and local authorities to respond effectively when these need to remove biohazardous waste from premises affected by crime and trauma scenes. Our ultimate goal is to protect the community from these dangerous pathogens.

4-Level Biosafety Classification - How does it work?

There are four levels of biosafety practices. Each level builds upon the other, starting from Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1), representing the “lowest” risk of disease, infection, and potential biohazard. Laboratories and work environments classified in a Level 4 (BSL-4) are those that handle the most dangerous and exotic bacteria/pathogens; the outbreak of these materials can be fatal and mostly impossible to treat with medication or vaccination.

Biosafety Level 1(BSL-1)

Microbes with the lowest or unknown risk of consistently causing diseases in healthy adults. Workplaces designated with BLS-1 classification usually present minimal risk to lab facilities and environments.

Even so, workers must adhere to the following regulations and safety practices:

  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - lab coats, gloves, mask, eye protection.
  • A sink must be available for hand washing/disinfection.
  • The lab area should have doors that separate this workspace from the rest of the facility.

Facilities designated with BSL-1 classification include Research labs with the use of benches.

Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2)

Built upon BSL-1, environments designated with a BLS-2 classification work with microbes that pose a moderate risk of exposure. Microbes are typically indigenous (microorganisms that have been adapting and surviving within the native soil environments throughout the years), and the intensity of the associated diseases may variate.

Regulations and safety practices include:

  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - lab coats, gloves, mask, eye protection. Emphasis on eye protection and face shields, if necessary.
  • A sink and eyewash must be available for disinfection.
  • Use of autoclave or specific alternative methods to dispose of biological waste.

Facilities designated with BSL-2 classification include Laboratories with self-closing doors. Entrance is restricted.

Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3)

Built upon BLS-2, environments designated with a BLS-3 classification work with microbes that may carry potentially lethal diseases via respiratory transmission. Microbes can be either indigenous or exotic

Regulations and safety practices include:

  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - lab coats, gloves, mask, eye protection. Respirators may be required.
  • All microbe work must be performed using a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
  • A hands-free sink and eyewash must be available for disinfection.
  • The laboratory has an airflow system that prevents the exhausted air from coming into clean areas.

Facilities designated with BSL-3 classification include Laboratories with two sets of self-closing and locking doors. Access to the laboratory is restricted/controlled at all times.

Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4)

Built upon BLS-3, environments designated with a BSL-4 classification work with the most dangerous and exotic bacteria and microbes. Diseases and infections caused by these microbes can be aerosol-transmitted and are usually fatal.

Regulations and safety practices include:

  • Mandatory change of clothing before and after exiting the laboratory. A Post-exit shower is also mandatory.
  • Decontamination of all used materials before exiting the laboratory.
  • All microbe work must be performed using a Class III Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC).
  • Adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - Full bodysuit with air supply and positive pressure system.

Facilities designated with BSL-4 classification include Laboratories in a separate building or isolated from the rest of the building. Laboratories must have dedicated air supply and exhaust air systems and their own decontamination systems.

Rodent Droppings Removal, Disinfection, and Decontamination - Bio-One of Orange.

During wintertime, houses and properties can be impacted by rats, mice, and other household pests. These creatures can pose a serious health problem, as their feces and urine are highly infectious. Bio-One of Orange is the right choice for rodent droppings removal, disinfection, and decontamination from this type of waste throughout Orange County, CA.

Our specialists follow strict guidelines and use only EPA-approved chemicals to guarantee complete disinfection for your house or property. Rodent feces and urine can carry multiple bacteria and diseases that must be cleaned by professionals. Bio-One of Orange certified technicians can help you clean the biohazards resulting from a pest disinfection process. These procedures often do not include removing the bodies and other biohazardous residues.

Rodents can spread dangerous diseases to humans through direct contact.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rodents can transmit over 35 different diseases by direct contact, meaning when humans handle rodents (including decomposed matter, feces, urine residue, saliva, and more). One of the most common diseases transmitted directly by rodents is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS). Here are common facts about HPS:

  • HPS symptoms may develop from one to eight weeks after rodent feces or urine exposure.
  • Early HPS symptoms include fatigue, body ache, fever, and joint pain. People can also experience headaches, nausea, vomiting, and other flu-related symptoms.
  • Early symptoms build up to cause respiratory issues in the body. According to the CDC, patients suffering from HPS have experienced shortness of breath, as the syndrome severely affects the lungs.
  • HPS is a lethal disease, with a mortality rate of 38%, as reported by the CDC.

Other diseases directly transmitted by rodents include Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, Lassa fever, Leptospirosis, Salmonellosis, Rat-bite fever, and more.

Rodents can also transmit bacteria and viruses via indirect contact. Some of these viruses include Babesiosis, Colorado Tick fever, Lyme Disease, Relapsing fever, and more. If your house is infested with rats, mice, bats, and other animals, don’t expose yourself or your loved ones. Rodent droppings removal should only be done by professionals. Using the incorrect chemicals and not having the proper PPE can result in disease outbreaks.

How Bio-One can Help People Struggling with Animal Hoarding

Hoarding is a complex issue in itself. The struggle with getting the simplest, day-to-day activities results in a diminished quality of life. This issue becomes far more dangerous when animals are victims of this situation. Animal hoarding is often described as a distinct mental health disorder. The reasons people “collect” or hoard animals are related to previous mental conditions that need to be addressed to help both the individual and the animals living in these conditions.

Bio-One of Orange works with law enforcement, local authorities, and Humane Officials when animal hoarding scenarios affect the community. Our ultimate goal is to help those in greater need, and while these can be tough situations, we understand that many lives are at stake.

We are sharing the common signs to help identify an animal hoarding scenario, plus how our Bio-One of Orange specialists can assist people in getting their life back together and, hopefully, save the lives of innocent animals that, in the end, are just victims of a mistaken, missed approached intention of love.

How Can you Identity An Animal Hoarding Scenario?

Many people own multiple pets. That doesn’t make them animal hoarders. Animal hoarding signs are associated with a group of characteristics that include:

The individual has lost control over how many animals live on their property.

Animal hoarders usually lose count of how many animals are under their care. This is especially dangerous as animals can reproduce and become plagues for the surrounding neighbor/community.

Their house or property shows signs of deterioration.

Animals need proper care of their physiological needs. When hoarders fail to provide this basic care, their house or property usually becomes a deteriorated, crumbling scenario: dirty or broken windows, filthy house furniture, dirty floors, clutter, and trash.

Strong ammonia smells from the house or property.

Animal urine and feces are highly infectious. If animals are trapped inside a house or property, they will meet their needs wherever they find suitable. These strong smells trespass perimeters and can become a public health issue.

Animals show signs of malnutrition.

Failing to provide minimum welfare conditions for animals is one of the most common signs of someone struggling with animal hoarding. The problem is they will not admit that their animals suffer from inadequate living conditions (food, nutrition, bathing, and even socializing). In the most extreme cases, animals can die as victims of these poor conditions, creating an even more dangerous environment for the individual and the other animals.

Bio-One of Orange can help

It’s important to understand that animal hoarding hides numerous mental health conditions that need to be addressed (people struggling with animal hoarding have gone through traumatic events or struggle with mental conditions like Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety, and Depression) to help them get the help they deserve and keep them from relapsing to an animal hoarding situation in the future.

If you or someone you care about are struggling with Animal hoarding, please, let our Bio-One of Orange specialists take care. Following strict guidelines and procedures, we will ensure the home is safe for the individual to return.

We will also work with the individual, family, or community members to assist and rescue the animals. In the face of an animal hoarding scenario, it’s important to approach the affected individual with empathy and a sincere desire to help and make them feel comfortable as we care for them and the animals. Ultimately, we want what’s best for everyone!

Who is Qualified to help with Hoarding Disorder? Bio-One of Orange.

Bio-One of Orange in Orange County, California, understands that hoarding is a delicate matter which should be treated with care and compassion. We understand that someone struggling with hoarding is not likely to get professional help, which is why we share helpful information about how to help with hoarding disorder.

Hoarding is a complex but treatable condition. There’s more to hoarding disorder than compulsively holding onto things. For someone who hoards, their items have emotional value, and letting go of them may create stress, anxiety, and fear.

Bio-One of Orange cares to let you know if you or someone you know is dealing with hoarding; many resources are available to get the proper treatment. Anyone can overcome these scenarios, no matter how dark or difficult they might seem.

Who is best qualified to help with Hoarding Disorder?

A person struggling with hoarding experiences a diminished quality of life. They usually neglect themselves to a point where the easiest daily activities like cooking, cleaning, and even sleeping can become quite challenging.

Oftentimes, in hoarding situations, the living space has become unsanitary and dangerous to enter. In some cases, there are rats, rat feces and urine, bugs, biohazards, and much more. Hoarding is diagnosed and treated by a mental health professional. While there’s no specific reason why a hoarder accumulates things, there are multiple risk factors that can help identify and approach the disorder.

The main and most valuable thing you can do for someone who is struggling with a hoarding disorder is to support the individual in getting help from a mental health professional. Doctors will assist individuals with therapy and treatment for any related condition like anxiety, OCD, or depression so that they can return to their homes with a different perspective on their lives and their belongings.

Bio-One of Orange can help.

Reach out to Orange County’s local government agencies, they usually work with public agencies that can help individuals with the intervention process. Sometimes, people hoard animals, and professional welfare agencies may be necessary if the lives of animals are in jeopardy.

Bio-One of Orange can help with hoarding disorder, especially in cleaning, decluttering, and decontaminating the house or property. Our main goal is to help families get their lives back on track and help them return to a renovated home with the hope of a fresh, new start!
